Low Loaders by Chieftain Trailers

Chieftain's agricultural low loader range is designed for transporting plant and equipment between farms, fields, and worksites. The standard models are built for use with agricultural tractors, featuring hydraulic brakes, multi-leaf spring suspension with equalising rockers, and 12-volt ISO lighting systems. Bed lengths start at 6 metres with a 1.5-metre beavertail, providing a generous loading area for excavators, rollers, and other machinery.

The Fast Tow low loaders are specifically designed for towing behind high-speed tractors and Fastracs. These models feature commercial axles, parabolic spring suspension with tie bars, and WABCO EBS electronic braking systems, permitting safe travel at higher road speeds. The 3 Axle XCEL Edition represents the top of the range, with gross trailer weights up to 33 tonnes and enhanced specification throughout.

The Midi Low Loader bridges the gap between agricultural and commercial use. Available on mechanical or air suspension with carrying capacities up to 11.7 tonnes gross, it features commercial axles, WABCO EBS braking, and a 24-volt ISO system permitting travel up to 105kph. It is an ideal solution for transporting small plant such as mini excavators and rollers.

Standard features across the range include sprung-assisted or hydraulic ramps, stainless steel toolboxes, galvanised pull-out outriggers, tying points on the deck and sides, and Keruing hardwood or timber floors with chequer plate grip bars on the beavertail. All trailers are shot-blasted and finished in two-pack primer and paint.

Why Choose Chieftain?

Chieftain's agricultural low loaders benefit from the same engineering standards applied to their EU Type Approved commercial range. The result is a tractor-drawn trailer with the build quality, suspension, and braking performance normally found on truck-drawn equipment. With models from the compact Midi to the 33-tonne XCEL, there is a Chieftain low loader for every scale of operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an agricultural low loader used for?

An agricultural low loader is a low-height flatbed trailer towed behind a tractor, used to transport heavy machinery between farms, fields, and worksites. Common loads include diggers, mini-excavators, rollers, compactors, and other plant equipment. The low deck height makes loading and unloading easier and keeps the overall transport height within legal limits.

What payload can Chieftain agricultural low loaders carry?

Chieftain agricultural low loaders range from the compact Midi Low Loader with capacities up to 11.7 tonnes gross, through to the 3 Axle XCEL Edition with gross trailer weights up to 33 tonnes. The 2 Axle and 3 Axle standard models sit between these, with payload depending on the specific axle configuration and towing vehicle.

Do Chieftain agricultural low loaders have ramps?

Yes. Chieftain agricultural low loaders feature hydraulic beavertail ramps for easy loading and unloading of tracked and wheeled machinery. The ramp angle is designed to allow safe access for equipment with low ground clearance. Options include sprung-assisted or fully hydraulic ramps, with chequer plate grip bars on the beavertail for traction.

Can I use an agricultural low loader on public roads?

Agricultural low loaders towed behind a tractor are permitted on public roads, subject to width, length, and speed regulations. Chieftain's Fast Tow low loader models are equipped with road-legal lighting, braking, and suspension for safe highway use. The Midi Low Loader is rated for travel up to 105kph with its WABCO EBS braking system. Always check current DVSA and RSA regulations for your specific combination.

What is the difference between the Midi Low Loader and the XCEL Edition?

The Midi Low Loader is a compact model designed for smaller plant such as mini-excavators and rollers, with capacities up to 11.7 tonnes gross and road speeds up to 105kph. The 3 Axle XCEL Edition is the top of the range, handling gross trailer weights up to 33 tonnes with enhanced suspension and braking. The XCEL is designed for heavier machinery and more demanding haulage requirements.

How does a Chieftain agricultural low loader compare to hiring a commercial low loader?

Owning a Chieftain agricultural low loader lets you move plant and equipment on your own schedule, without waiting for a hired truck. Fast Tow models provide commercial-grade suspension and braking behind your existing tractor, removing the need for a separate HGV. For farms and contractors who regularly move machinery between sites, the long-term cost is typically lower than repeated hire charges.

What floor and deck options are available on Chieftain low loaders?

Chieftain agricultural low loaders are available with Keruing hardwood or timber floors, providing a durable, high-grip surface for tracked and wheeled machinery. Chequer plate grip bars are fitted to the beavertail ramp area. Standard features include galvanised pull-out outriggers, stainless steel toolboxes, and tying points on the deck and sides for load securing.
