Semi Low Loaders by Chieftain Trailers

Chieftain's semi low loader range represents the core of their commercial trailer offering. Each model is a strong, robust trailer engineered for the daily demands of plant hire, haulage, and construction transport operations. The range starts with the 2-axle semi low loader and extends through 3, 4, and 5-axle configurations to handle progressively heavier payloads.

Chieftain have invested heavily in the research, design, and development of their stepframe low loader platform. The current design combines both strength and low unladen weight, maximising payload capacity within legal gross vehicle weight limits. Chassis construction uses high-tensile steel throughout, delivering the structural integrity required for transporting excavators, dozers, and other heavy plant.

All models feature commercial axles with air suspension and raise/lower valve, WABCO EBS electronic braking systems, spring brakes with automatic slack adjusters, and Keruing hardwood floors. Self-steering rear axles are available on multi-axle configurations, improving manoeuvrability on tight construction sites and urban roads.

The extendable semi low loaders (3-axle and 4-axle) add the ability to handle abnormal indivisible loads, extending to accommodate longer machinery. The commercial flatbed variant provides a versatile platform for general haulage, with gross weights up to 25 tonnes.

Every Chieftain semi low loader is supplied with EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval certification, permitting legal operation across all EU member states. Trailers are shot-blasted and finished in two-pack primer and paint, with full LED lighting and comprehensive safety equipment as standard.

Why Choose Chieftain?

EU Type Approval is not optional for commercial haulage; it is a legal requirement. Every Chieftain semi low loader carries full certification from the UK Vehicle Certification Agency. Combined with in-house engineering, WABCO EBS braking, and 57 years of manufacturing experience, Chieftain deliver commercial trailers that meet the highest standards of safety, compliance, and durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a semi low loader trailer?

A semi low loader is a low-deck trailer pulled by an articulated truck (HGV), used for transporting heavy and oversized loads such as construction plant, industrial equipment, and large machinery. The low deck height reduces overall transport height, allowing taller loads to be carried within legal height limits. Chieftain's semi low loaders hold full EU Type Approval.

What is the payload capacity of a Chieftain semi low loader?

Chieftain semi low loaders are available in 2, 3, 4, and 5 axle configurations to suit different payloads. The range includes standard fixed-length models and extendable versions (3 Axle and 4 Axle Extendable) for longer loads. All models are designed and certified for commercial use on public roads across the UK and EU.

Do Chieftain semi low loaders have EU Type Approval?

Yes. Every Chieftain commercial trailer, including all semi low loaders, has been granted European Whole Vehicle Type Approval by the UK Vehicle Certification Agency. This permits the trailer to be used legally in any EU member state without additional certification. Type Approval covers the trailer's structure, braking, lighting, and suspension systems.

What ramp options are available on Chieftain semi low loaders?

Chieftain semi low loaders are available with hydraulic beavertail ramps, mechanical ramps, and full-width loading ramps. The choice depends on the type of equipment being loaded and the specific application. Hydraulic ramps are standard on most models and are designed to accommodate tracked machinery with low ground clearance.

What is the difference between a fixed-length and extendable semi low loader?

A fixed-length semi low loader has a set deck length, while an extendable model (such as the Chieftain 3 Axle or 4 Axle Extendable) can be telescoped to a longer deck for oversized loads and retracted for standard transport. Extendable models provide greater versatility but are heavier. The choice depends on the range of loads the trailer will regularly carry.

How does a Chieftain semi low loader compare to a standard flatbed trailer?

A semi low loader has a lower deck height than a standard flatbed, which reduces the overall height of the loaded vehicle. This is critical for transporting tall machinery within the 4.95-metre legal height limit. The lower centre of gravity also improves stability. Standard flatbeds are suited to lighter, lower-profile loads where overall height is not a concern.

Can a Chieftain semi low loader carry a deck widener?

Yes. Chieftain manufacture both Tri Axle and Quad Axle Deck Widener trailers within the semi low loader range. These specialist models feature decks that widen hydraulically to accommodate oversized loads that exceed standard trailer width. They are Type Approved and designed for transporting wide plant and equipment under abnormal load regulations.
