Rail Trailers by Chieftain Trailers

Chieftain's rail trailer range enables the efficient movement of materials and equipment along railway lines for maintenance, infrastructure, and construction projects. The trailers are designed to be towed behind properly equipped Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs) or pushed along the track, providing flexible transport solutions for rail contractors.

The core platform range covers 3-metre, 4-metre, 5-metre, and 6-metre rail trailers, each ideal for mainline rail work. Critically, these trailers can be manufactured to suit narrow gauge, standard gauge, or broad track gauges, accommodating rail networks across the UK, Ireland, and internationally. Rail trailers are approved for RIS 1530 Issue 6 (UK), DB netz (Germany), and I-PLM-5001 (Ireland).

Standard specification includes 40mm couplings fitted to front and rear, fabricated tow poles with 1560mm eye centres, recessed lashing points in the side chime and floor, steel chequer plate floors, and full safety labelling. Trailers are shot-blasted and finished in two-pack primer and paint for corrosion resistance in the demanding rail environment.

Beyond the flat platform trailers, the range includes 3-way tipping rail trailers for distributing ballast and aggregates alongside the track, ballast boxes for transporting and depositing rail ballast, dropside rail trailers for versatile load handling, block trailers with capacities up to 25 tonnes, and container trailers fitted with ISO twistlocks for intermodal operations. The 40-tonne rail trailer provides the highest payload capacity in the range.

Chieftain's engineering team works directly with rail contractors to design trailers that meet specific project requirements, including custom gauge configurations, specialised load-securing arrangements, and modifications for particular rail network standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rail trailer used for?

A rail trailer is a specialist trailer designed to run on railway tracks, used to transport materials, equipment, and tools to railway maintenance worksites. They are towed behind Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs) or pushed along the track. Chieftain rail trailers are used for mainline rail maintenance, track renewals, and infrastructure projects.

What sizes of rail trailer does Chieftain offer?

Chieftain manufacture rail trailers in 3, 4, 5, and 6 metre lengths. The range also includes 3-way tipping rail trailers, dropside rail trailers, and a 40 tonne rail trailer in a 4 axle configuration. Ballast boxes and specialist rail containers are also available. Each model can be manufactured to suit different track gauges.

Can Chieftain rail trailers be used on different track gauges?

Yes. Chieftain rail trailers can be built to suit narrow gauge, standard gauge (1,435mm), or broad gauge railways. The wheel spacing is set during manufacture to match the specific track gauge required. This makes Chieftain rail trailers suitable for railway networks worldwide, not just UK mainline infrastructure.

Do Chieftain rail trailers meet Network Rail standards?

Chieftain work directly with rail contractors and design their rail trailers to meet Network Rail and international rail standards. Every rail trailer is built to specification and can be customised for specific track gauge, load capacity, and operational requirements. Chieftain have over 57 years of engineering experience applied to rail applications.

What is a 3-way tipping rail trailer?

A Chieftain 3-way tipping rail trailer can discharge its load to the left, right, or rear while on the track. This is particularly useful for distributing ballast, spoil, and materials along the trackside during maintenance and renewal works, where the discharge direction needs to be controlled to avoid obstructing adjacent lines or infrastructure.

What is the difference between a dropside rail trailer and a standard rail trailer?

A dropside rail trailer has hinged or removable side panels, allowing easier loading and unloading of equipment, rails, and materials from the sides of the trailer. A standard rail trailer has fixed sides. Dropside models are preferred when materials need to be accessed from multiple points along the track, such as during rail renewal and sleeper replacement work.

How do Chieftain rail trailers compare to standard road trailers adapted for rail?

Chieftain rail trailers are purpose-built for track use from the outset, with rail wheels, track-compatible suspension, and chassis geometry designed for the rail environment. Adapted road trailers often compromise on weight, track compatibility, and operational efficiency. A purpose-built rail trailer provides better performance, reliability, and compliance with rail safety standards.
