Towable Diesel Bowsers by Chieftain Trailers

Chieftain's towable diesel bowsers enable construction companies, farms, quarries, and fuel distributors to transport diesel legally on public roads to remote worksites, fields, and locations without fixed fuel infrastructure. Every bowser is UN-approved and EU Type Approved, meaning it meets the stringent international standards required for the road transport of hazardous goods.

The bunded design provides secondary containment as required by environmental regulations. The inner tank is constructed from 3mm mild steel with internal baffles to reduce fuel surge during transport. The 4mm mild steel outer tank provides the secondary containment layer, ensuring that any leak from the inner tank is contained and does not reach the environment.

All models feature a type-approved chassis with torsion rubber suspension and an over-run braking system to full road specification. The twin-axle design ensures stability during towing, and the tough chassis construction handles the weight of a full fuel load with confidence.

Standard equipment includes a lockable cabinet housing the pumping equipment, a four-digit flow meter for accurate dispensing records, an in-line strainer filter, and a 12-volt ISO lighting system to full road specification. A ball hitch lock provides security when the bowser is left on site.

The range covers the most common fuel transport requirements: the 220-gallon model for smaller operations and daily refuelling runs, the 300-gallon for medium-volume requirements, and the 500-gallon for larger worksites and operations that need to minimise refuelling trips.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Chieftain towable fuel bowsers legal to use on public roads?

Yes. Chieftain towable diesel bowsers are UN-approved and hold full EU Type Approval for the transport of diesel on public highways. This means you can legally tow a Chieftain bowser on the road to deliver fuel to remote worksites, farms, and construction sites. Not all fuel bowsers on the market carry this certification.

What does bunded mean on a fuel bowser?

Bunded means the fuel tank has a secondary outer skin (the bund) that contains any fuel in the event of a leak from the inner tank. This secondary containment is a legal requirement for fuel storage in many situations and prevents environmental contamination. All Chieftain towable fuel bowsers feature bunded construction as standard.

What capacities of towable diesel bowser does Chieftain offer?

Chieftain manufacture towable diesel bowsers in a range of capacities from 220 gallons (1,000 litres) up to 500 gallons (2,230 litres) and larger. The choice of capacity depends on your fuel consumption requirements and the towing vehicle's capability. Larger models feature twin axles for stability at road speeds.

What fuel dispensing equipment is fitted to Chieftain bowsers?

Chieftain towable diesel bowsers come equipped with a fuel pump, delivery hose, and nozzle for on-site refuelling. Options include flow meters, digital counters, automatic shut-off nozzles, and filtration systems. The pump can be powered electrically (12V or 240V) or by PTO, depending on the application.

How does a towable bowser compare to a static fuel tank?

A towable bowser can be moved between sites and towed on public roads (with UN approval), making it ideal for delivering fuel to remote locations, construction sites, and farms. A static fuel cube stays in one place and serves as a fixed-site fuel store. Many operations use both: a static cube at the depot and a towable bowser for field deliveries.

What regulations apply to transporting diesel on public roads?

Transporting diesel on public roads requires the bowser to carry UN approval for dangerous goods transport (ADR regulations). Chieftain towable diesel bowsers are designed and certified to meet these requirements. Operators must also comply with driver training obligations and carry the appropriate transport documentation during transit.

Can I tow a Chieftain diesel bowser behind a pickup truck or 4x4?

Chieftain towable diesel bowsers are available in capacities and weights suited to towing behind a range of vehicles, from pickups and 4x4s to tractors and commercial vehicles. The 220-gallon and 300-gallon models are commonly towed behind lighter vehicles. Always check that your towing vehicle's rated capacity exceeds the gross weight of the loaded bowser.
